It’s halfway through International Polar Year, and Arctic scientists are already seeing results from their many research projects.

Dr. David Hik is the Executive Director of the Canadian IPY Secretariat. And at an IPY workshop in Edmonton, he highlighted the excitement generated by the Circumpolar Flaw Lead System Study.

Led by the University of Manitoba, this major study involves over 200 researchers from 15 countries.

They’re working from the Canadian icebreaker Amundsen which has overwintered in the Beaufort Sea.

The scientists are investigating the role of climate in changing the Flaw lead system. This is the region where open water persists throughout the winter.

DR. DAVID HIK: One of the things they’ve discovered is just how dynamic that system is, things that you can’t see from satellites and that are not revealed when you are able to sample later in the season. But having a presence there year round has given us a very different sense of just how dynamic those ice covered bodies of water are and how fluid the connections are between land and the marine system and how that influences wildlife and people. And I think projects like that have really demonstrated the value of the Polar Year.
