Dr. Gary Albach

While the essence of nano is all things small, there’s nothing tiny about the effort to build a strong nanotechnology industry in Alberta.

That’s what brought more than 200 people to Edmonton last week for the first Nanotech Showcase. This was hosted Alberta Ingenuity and Alberta Advanced Education and Technology.

Presenting at the two day conference was Dr. Gary Albach, the new executive director of NanoAlberta.

DR. GARY ALBACH:
Well the first thing is getting NanoAlberta started: staffing, new people, the budgets, the direction. The strategy for the province was introduced about a year ago. It’s an industrial strategy for nanotechnology in Alberta. And it’s generally recognized across the country as being one of the best articulated, best funded and best thought out industrial strategies.

Dr. Albach says Alberta’s capacity, with NINT and its university research, makes it the nanotechnology centre of Canada.

Alberta Ingenuity

Established in 2000, the Alberta Ingenuity Fund supports science and engineering research of the highest calibre, to create a prosperous future for the province of Alberta. It draws funding from a $1 billion endowment established in 2000 and managed by the Government of Alberta to build the capacity for innovation, especially in areas with long lasting social and economic impact.

Among its many programs, Alberta Ingenuity supports graduate students and university researchers, industrial research and commercialization partnerships, and has established several Centres and Institutes.

In January 2010, under the new Alberta Innovation Framework, Alberta Ingenuity was restructured and absorbed in the new agency Alberta Innovates Technology Solutions.
