Innovation Anthology #200:
In this age of antibiotic resistance, what’s old is new again.
That’s certainly the case with silver. Its antimicrobial properties have been known for centuries
Exciton Technologies Inc is an early stage Edmonton company that has developed new chemical processes to better utilize silver.
It can then be added to products such as bandages and cleaning solutions for hospitals.
So promising is this new technology, the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research has granted $500,000 towards its commercialization.
And as Exciton’s president Rod Precht explains, now he can scale up production.
ROD PRECHT: Right now we’ve been basically doing batch scale production, just hand made samples. But in order to capture a larger scale licensing partner, we need to demonstrate we can meet a supply chain by delivering the products in volume. So we’ve got a pilot scale roll coater coming inactually in the next couple of weeks. We will continue to prosecute our patent applications and conduct some evaluations clinically of the products to support a market partner to license the deal.
Rod Precht expects his technology to double the market value of silver based wound care within 5 years.
Thanks today to The Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research.
