For as long as Dr. Margaret-Ann Armour has been a chemist and professor, she has also been a champion of women in science.

25 years ago at the University of Alberta, she helped found the group WISEST, or Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science and Technology.

And now, Dr. Armour has spun her magic again, this time with the establishment of a national centre which brings together 27 different agencies for women in science.

It is modeled after centres like those in Britain, Australia and Germany. And the national headquarters will be in Edmonton.

DR. MARGARET ANN ARMOUR : It will be really a virtual centre It’s going to be a centre which very much adds value to the 27 groups. So it will be very much a small, ongoing staff, and eventually probably small offices across the country, satellite offices. But the national office will be in Edmonton because as I say, the Alberta Government has been the first one to come through.

According to Dr. Margaret Ann Armour, one task for the national centre is to help increase percentage of female graduates who go on to achieve post doctorate and academic positions.
