George Weyerhauser Jr. is the former president of the forest company Weyerhauser Canada. He’s now involved with a technology startup company called Houghton Cascade

At the recent conference on Nanotechnology and Forest Products, Weyerhauser said the industry can play an important role in ensuring the environmental safety of nanomaterials.

GEORGE WEYERHAUSER JR:
The message to the forest industry is we have to be involved. We are the experts in collecting the raw material. We understand sustainable management of the forest. We have to make sure that we’re an attractive place to work for young scientists. We have to make sure that we are continuing to hear the environmental concerns about what we do. And I think we need to bring some of that knowledge and some of that history to the nanotech scientists. Because they are very, very much caught up in the excitement of what they are doing and they may not take the time to explain to the public how they are determining that it is safe, and how they think they can benefit society. And we in the forest industry, we’ve got some scar tissue from that. I think we can help drive this revolution forward if we’re involved. And I think we’ll be a better place to work because of it.

That was George Weyerhauser Jr,

Alberta Ingenuity

Established in 2000, the Alberta Ingenuity Fund supports science and engineering research of the highest calibre, to create a prosperous future for the province of Alberta. It draws funding from a $1 billion endowment established in 2000 and managed by the Government of Alberta to build the capacity for innovation, especially in areas with long lasting social and economic impact.

Among its many programs, Alberta Ingenuity supports graduate students and university researchers, industrial research and commercialization partnerships, and has established several Centres and Institutes.

In January 2010, under the new Alberta Innovation Framework, Alberta Ingenuity was restructured and absorbed in the new agency Alberta Innovates Technology Solutions.
