Innovation Anthology #247:
One of the hardest and most critical things for a startup technology company is finding the money to get an invention from the lab bench to the market place.
That’s where AVAC Ltd. comes in. This venture capital investment firm was established in 1997 by the Alberta Government. President and CEO Ross Bricker explains.
ROSS BRICKER: Our primary job is to help to catalyze homegrown business successes in agriculture. So that’s areas that are post farm gate for the most part. Anywhere from software companies that can help farmers through to molecular biology areas, new opportunities to produce anything from insulin, with one of our companies SemBioSys, from plants. So growing them in the field, harvesting them for the high end pharmaceutical market, right through to opportunities to turn feedlot waste into biogas and electricity as a renewable source of energy. So a real wide range.
According to Ross Bricker, AVAC has invested to date in over 110 start-up companies. COLD-fx is one of its early success stories. And it has recently expanded into high technology and medical devices.
