Innovation Anthology #295:
Alberta’s Minister of Advanced Education and Technology Doug Horner has announced the latest recipients of Alberta’s Innovation Vouchers.
204 startup technology companies from across the province will receive grants of either $10,000 or $50,000 to help in some aspect of their commercialization.
Doug Horner explains how the companies might use the money.
DOUG HORNER: Well that depends where they are in the value chain of their product. If they are looking at business plan mentoring, it will help them build that business plan. If they’re looking at building a prototype, these types of labs are not cheap, so $10,000 might give them the day or two that they need to be in the lab. But remember, too, this isn’t a 100 percent grant. We do expect the companies to raise some capital of their own. We do expect them to put some of their own skin in the game and so it isn’t about just paying for anything that comes along the line. It has to be something that’s feasible, that’s technically feasible, that’s something that is aligned with where we’re headed, and that they’re going to have a good opportunity of success at. So that tells you, when you’ve got 204 of them, that’s a pretty good sign.
According to Minister Doug Horner, interest in the Innovation Vouchers increased by 25 percent over last year. And companies receiving vouchers are in the areas of life sciences, energy, environment, and health technology.
