Along with mad cow, another prion disease that could have a significant social and economic impact is Chronic Wasting Disease.

Dr. Ellen Goddardaboriginal communities.

That’s because wild meat is dietary staple with many aboriginal people.

DR. ELLEN GODDARD:
Their food security could actually be affected by the disease.
Currently we’re not clear. We know that Chronic Wasting Disease is in deer and elk and we know that it’s been found in moose in the United States. So chances are we’re going to find it at some point in Canada. So we’ve been trying to track in certain communities within Alberta, certain aboriginal communities within Alberta. We’ve been looking at people’s perception about the disease and people’s attitudes to how the disease should be handled, and trying to ascertain how much of the potentially affected animals are actually being consumed in various communities.

The challenge for Dr. Goddard is to ascertain the risk without unduly scaring the people.
