Innovation Anthology #323:
What happens when two industries like forestry and energy compete for the same land base?
In northeastern Alberta, Alberta Pacific Forest Industries has demonstrated that cooperation can not only save both industries money, it can also reduce the environmental impact.
That effort made AlPac the first winner of the new category Shared Footprints for Excellence in Integrated Land Management at the 2010 Emerald Awards.
Don Pope is AlPac’s Integrated Land Management Specialist.
DON POPE: What we’ve done is help them narrow down seismic lines to the point where they are almost negligible on the landscape anymore. And there is no lasting footprint comes from most of that exploration technique. On the development side, we’ve initiated planning projects with all of the mines and with the SAGD developers there. And on the reclamation side now, we’ve taken an initiative through the University of Alberta’s research program. And we’ve been planting trees as an operational project on the landscape. And this year we’re up to 990,000 trees.
According to Don Pope, the integrated land management partnershipswith energy companies has saved 20,000 hectares of forest over the last six years.
