Innovation Anthology #341:
In 2007, Justin Pahara achieved celebrity as a member of the Butanerds. This was a team of students from the University of Alberta entered in the International Genetically Engineered Machines competition.
The group developed a novel way to turn butanol into a bio-fuel.
Today, Justin is a PhD student at Cambridge University. And he was in Edmonton recently as a judge at the iGEM workshop to prepare Alberta’s entries into the 2010 iGEM competition.
JUSTIN PAHARA: One of the things I’ve got my eye on is how these ideas can be translated into products and how we can begin to create a bigger bio-industry in Alberta Another thing is just looking at team dynamics, the idea of interdisciplinary research. iGEM really brings this together. You have students who are computer scientists working with biologists working with chemists working with business, And so I like to see how these different disciplines work together these projects.
According to Justin Pahara, Alberta’s 3 iGEM teams are among the 131 from around the globe who will compete in Boston in early November.
