Innovation Anthology #367:
Among the participants at the recent InnoWest Conference in Calgary was Andy Melnyk.
Andy is a senior strategist with the new organization, Innovation Saskatchewan.
Like its neighbours across the west, Saskatchewan is looking to technology and innovation to diversity its economy beyond the traditional sectors of agriculture, mining, and energy.
As an example, Andy Melnyk says the Canadian Light Source Synchrotron in Saskatoon is attracting attention from across Canada and around the world.
ANDY MELNYCK: Boeing, for example, is leading the charge to create an innovative materials consortium based around the capabilities that exist now around the synchrotron facility . Also the Canadian Light Source was awarded a contract earlier this year from the federal government to explore the non nuclear production of medical isotopes, Molly-99 to be specific. So that project gets underway in the coming months.
But even with sophisticated technologies like the synchrotron, Andy Melnyk says the continuing challenge for Innovation in Saskatchewan is access to capital and entrepreneurial talent.
