It’s one thing to mine the oil sands to get bitumen. It’s quite another to reclaim the mine sites back to forests and wetlands.

CONRAD – The Canadian Oil Sands Network of Research and Development,
recently gathered professors and grad their students for its annual symposium on reclamation research.

The symposium is an opportunity for graduate students to present their research which addresses important oil sands issues.

Chairing this year’s symposium was Robert Vassov, a vegetation researcher with Syncrude Canada Ltd.

ROBERT VASSOV:
We have such a range of activities that cover wetland research, soil research, vegetation research, hydrology, water research . And I like to think that it’s as difficult to put the ecosystem back together as it is to make oil. I think in some respects its even more difficult. Because the scope of the environment is so wide. And there are so many different aspects to putting it back to a functioning ecosystem.

Rob Vassov says the symposium helps industry keep up with the latest science while giving graduate students a chance to network with other scientists and future employers in industry.
