Innovation Anthology #388:
Among the 19 scientific superstars who’ve been recruited to Canada as part of the
Canada Excellence Research Chairs program is Dr. Howard Wheater.
Dr. Wheater has moved from Imperial College in the United Kingdom to the University of Saskatchewan. And his Canada Excellence Research Chair is in Water Security.
Dr. Wheater introduced himself and the program at the recent CONRAD workshop on oil sands research. His mandate covers three themes.
DR. HOWARD WHEATER: The first is to do with climate change and water security. And we are planning to look in particular at the way in which climate change is affecting the Saskatchewan river basin and prairie water issues. The second is to do with land management and environmental change. So we’re interested in the way in which we changed the landscape of the prairies And then the third theme is to do with sustainable development of natural resources. And a primary Canadian example is the oil sands, looking at reclamation, remediation, and risk assessment issues.
With $30 million dollars in funding, Dr. Wheater expects to make a major splash to improve Canada’s water future.
