Innovation Anthology #418:
Aging baby boomers will have a tremendous impact on Canada’s health care system.
Dr. Alex Clark is a professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta.
He calls one approach to handling this coming tsunami of boomers “anticipatory medicine”.
DR ALEX CLARK: We know that we’re facing if you like an epidemic of chronic disease In high income countries like Canada, that epidemic really relates particularly to the population ages 75, 85 years of age and above. But many of the chronic diseases that we tend to see in those age groups have their roots in lifestyles that are established very early on in life, almost in their teenage years Anticipatory care focuses prevention towards interventions that provide support for change when people are in their 40’s or 50’s, before they develop these health problems but while they are engaged in these potentially health harming behaviors So it’s really moving support earlier on in the age trajectory.
Dr. Clark says the real problem is helping boomers overcome the barriers to making those lifestyle changes.
