Innovation Anthology #436:
Imagine having a research lab the size of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
That’s exactly where Calgary geomatics company Cell-Loc Location Technologies Inc is conducting its market trials.
Thanks to funding from TecTerra, Cell Loc is developing a new application for its wireless location technology.
As president and CEO Keith Bohn explains, Cell-Loc is developing a smart grid network for a utility company with 7 million meters in Sao Paolo.
KEITH BOHN: Rather than a person going out to read that data, our beacon transmits that data to our sites and our sites transmit the data in a private network to the utility. There are additional benefits because our beacon is a two way communication. So it can be used for operational efficiency. If a piece of equipment goes down, what we can determine, did it go down because of high pressure or temperature We can detect that information and we can send a signal back down to shutdown that piece of equipment or modify the operation of it.
Keith Bohn says the wireless technology has many commercial applications, such as tracking temperature inside refrigerated trucks making deliveries.
