As Vice President, Research at the University of Alberta, Dr. Lorne Babiuk believes it is very important to support the social sciences.
Art and music, he says, improve our quality of life. And social scientists anticipate public controversy.
Engaging social scientists could have eased the introduction of new technologies like genetically modified plants and the human papiloma vaccine.
Dr. Babiuk says it’s a lesson learned now that nanotechnology is moving from the lab into the marketplace.
DR. LORNE BABIUK: The other issue is nanotechnology. Everybody is enamoured with nanotechnology. And as a result of that, we actually have implemented a Arts-Scholar-in-Residence at our National Institute of Nanotechnology to be able to get the social science people and the arts faculties engaged in a hard core science which is I think is going to have huge implications for society. We can do the same thing for energy and how e could have gotten social scientists involved in energy file, and there would be either more or less environmental issues that people are going to discuss.
In 2012, Dr. Lorne Babiuk was recognized as one of Canada’s premier scientists by the Gairdner-Wightman Foundation.
