Osteoarthritis can be painful, debilitating, and is very hard to treat.

But Dr. Michael Doschak’s research on calcitonin is showing great promise.

Dr. Doschak is a member of Team Osteo Arthritis Alberta funded by Alberta Innovates Health Solutions.

According to Dr. Doschak, calcitonin is a peptide hormone the thyroid produces naturally to regulate bone metabolism.

DR. MICHAEL DOSCHAK: The beauty of calcitonin is that it’s a natural way of telling these inflammatory triggered remodeling events to slowdown or even stop and then it will allow the body to recover over that period of time. However, we have become aware of a body of literature talking about the analgesic for pain relieving effects of calcitonin at the same time. So we were excited by the fact that we may have a compound with dual functionality. So it might be slowing the disease progression. And, in fact, our preliminary results seem to support that.

Dr. Michael Doschak says calcitonin is just one of several biologics or peptide-based treatments his team is developing.

Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions was established as part of the Alberta Innovates system by an Act of Legislation of the Government of Alberta. It is a agency  of the Government of Alberta. We receive a yearly allocation from the Ministry of Health and report through the ministry to the people of Alberta.

Our Mandate and Roles document reflects our role and responsibilities and outlines the government statues and regulations with which we comply.

Alberta’s Health Research and Innovation Strategy (AHRIS) sets out Alberta’s health research agenda for the coming decade to ensure our considerable investments in research align with our priority—to improve the health of Albertans.
