Innovation Anthology #556:
The way doctors diagnose osteo arthritis may change thanks to the research of Dr. Ziad Abu Sara.
Ziad is a laser physicist working in the Human Performance lab at the University of Calgary.
DR. ZIAD ABU SARA: As a physicist, I was able to design a new stage of what we call a two-four tone microscope that can hold a live animal instead of a small tissue. I was also able to develop a new device that can limit the movement of the thigh bone of an animal to less than one micro meter in order to be able to image the cartilage cells of the chondrocytes in 3D during the activation of the animal muscles. I develop also a new approach to image the cells without, for example, barbequing it. This approach allows us not only to keep the cells alive during the experiement but also image the entire cartilage thickness.
Dr. Ziad Abu Sara says his group is the first in the world see chondrocytes in action, and this is producing very different results from previous research.
