Mexico has established a system of indigenous universities, and there is a growing desire for collaboration between Mexico and Canada.

Dr. Michael Mahon
is the President and Vice Chancellor at the University of Lethbridge.

He recently hosted a round table of several Canadian and Mexican universities.

On the agenda were topics like aboriginal social movements, different models for indigenous education, and scientific research.

DR. MCHAEL MAHON:
One of the things we’re looking at here at the University of Lethbridge is the whole issue of health and health practices and looking at indigenous knowledge around health and health practices. We have some new funding to look at alternative health practices here. And some professors who are really interested in looking at indigenous approaches to health. And a couple of universities in Mexico are doing a lot of work in this area. We will be signing an MOU with a university that is on the Yucatan peninsula that does a lot of work in alternative health practices.

Dr. Michael Mahon says the universities will now establish smaller groups to work out the details on how the two countries can cooperate on indigenous education and research.
