Innovation Anthology #608:
Dr. Nicholas Ashbolt believes its time for a paradigm shift in the way we think about water and sewage.
Dr. Ashbolt holds the new Alberta Innovates Health Solutions Translational Chair in Water. He’s also a professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta.
DR NICHOLAS ASHBOLT: Less than 20 percent of the water that we actually receive at our homes is needed to be of drinking water quality. For toilet flushing, clothes washing, garden irrigation purposes, for example. That water can be a lesser quality in the sense from a drinking point of view. And the question really is, how do make sure it’s safe, how do we measure that level of safety and the production of that water in an ongoing sustainable way. My research is based around what we call microbial risk assessment to look at the pathogens that may be found in waters and to what degree is safely treating that water so it is of safe use, what we call fit for purpose.
Dr. Ashbolt will receive 4.2 million dollars over the next seven years, He will research novel ways to recover value from waste water while protecting public health.

As the newly formed Alberta Innovates corporation, we still fund top quality, internationally competitive health research and innovation activities to improve the health and wellbeing of Albertans. We provide leadership for Alberta’s health research and innovation enterprise by directing, coordinating, reviewing, funding and supporting research and innovation.
Working with our many partners in the health system, we ensure that research achieves innovation in care, policy and practice, and that the needs of patients and clinicians influence research.
