Innovation Anthology #622:
Women are well represented amongst entrepreneurs in Alberta.
A recent survey for GEM, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, indicates the rate of female entrepreneurship in Alberta is almost equal, at 80 percent of the male rate.
Dr. Peter Josty leads the GEM Canada team.
He says Alberta’s women entrepreneurs are also more likely to conduct business to business operations, rather than retail.
DR PETER JOSTY: GEM divides entrepreneurship into different categories. In most countries, the most common category of entrepreneurship is consumer services which would be the local hairdresser, 7-11 and pizza. In Alberta, the highest rate of entrepreneurship is in business oriented services. And we see it as a characteristic of a resource based economy. Because if you think of the oil and gas sector, or agriculture or mining, those big industries have around them a huge number of services. And it’s really not surprising that a lot of entrepreneurship is dealing with services to serve the resource sector.
The GEM survey also shows that Alberta entrepreneurs tend to be older than those in other provinces.
