Among the winners of the Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation’s Grand Challenge is Liquid Light of New Jersey.

Liquid Light has developed a technology which will take the “petro” out of petrochemicals.

Liquid Light uses an electro-chemical process called  artificial  photosynthesis. This turns waste carbon dioxide into chemical building blocks.

Kyle Teamey is the company’s CEO and co-founder.

KYLE TEAMEY: Most people don’t realize how pervasive petrochemicals are in their lives.  almost literally everything,  is directly or indirectly composed of petrochemicals.   Lots and lots and lots of different things that we kind of take for granted in our lives.  The cushioning in your shoe,  the carpet on your floor, the paint on your wall, those sorts of things are all composed of petrochemicals.  So our technology effectively allows a petrochemical manufacturer to make the exact same material, but use carbon dioxide as the starting point rather than petroleum.  And so there’s some interesting benefits that come out from that.  One is that carbon dioxide is a very low cost material.   And then  there’s the environmental benefit of actually capturing this greenhouse gas and utilizing it.

Kyle Teamey says Liquid Light will use its $500,000 prize to scale up its process.
