Innovation Anthology #630:
Dr. Cheryl Currie is using a collaborative approach to develop the projects she will do in her new research chair at the University of lethbridge.
She holds the Alberta Innovates Health Solutions Translational Health Chair in Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing.
Dr. Currie believes First Nations communities should be driving the research to find solutions that address their particular needs.
DR. CHERYL CURRIE: Yesterday I was in a meeting with community members and we were writing a research grant together to look at suicide prevention because the community has identified gaps in suicide prevention. So if people unfortunately do try to attempt suicide, often they are put into a psychiatric ward for awhile but then they sent home and there’s not a lot of followup. And the family is sort of left wondering what to do and how to best help this person. So what the community has identified is a need for supports there so there’s some bridging and we can prevent for example maybe another suicide attempt.
Dr. Currie believes this collaborative approach will focus on the strengths of Aboriginal communities and move away from research that stigmatizes their problems.
Thanks today to ALBERTA INNOVATES HEALTH SOLUTIONS.
