Innovation Anthology #634:
Edmonton and the Prairie Region did very well at the first Start Up Canada Awards.
Randy Thompson was named Investor of the Year and TEC Edmonton was recognized as Incubator of the Year.
Chris Lumb is TEC Edmonton’s CEO.
CHRIS LUMB: Well partly it’s because we’ve have great outcomes. The companies that we work with, which is about a hundred companies a year, have great outcomes in terms of growth rates, ability to raise financing and an aggregate better survival rate, So they all do better. So that is I think probably the main thing. But I think the other thing that is really unique about us that impressed them is the fact that we are strongly community driven. We’re a joint venture between the University of Alberta and the City of Edmonton. We also have support from many, many different organizations and many different people, and we have hundreds of volunteers who contribute to what we do. And that is all this evidence that the community cares about here in Edmonton and that helps garner national attention.
Chris Lumb says the Start Up Canada Awards show Edmonton as a benchmark for entrepreneurship activities, awareness and outcomes across the country.
