The research of Dr. David Wishart at the University of Alberta has made him a global leader in the emerging field of  metabolomics.   

 

Turns out metabolytes can reveal the current state of your health or even predict future diseases you might get.

 

Western Economic Diversification and a number of other partners are funding two new pieces of equipment which are the centrepiece of David’s new venture, the Metabolomics Technology Demonstration Centre.

 

DR DAVID WISHART:  One is called a nuclear Magnetic Resonance or NMR spectrometer, and another one is a mass spectrometer  called a Q-TOF.  And we have developed some methods that will allow us to rapidly identify and quantify  metabolytes in blood or urine or saliva or just about any other kind of bio-fluid using these two types of instruments.    What they are going to allow us to do is test a lot of our devices and a lot of our kits so that we’ll know that they are performing exactly as they should  so that you won’t need million dollar instruments to run them.

 

According to Dr. Wishart, funding for the  new machines and services amounts to almost three million dollars.

Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions

Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions was established as part of the Alberta Innovates system by an Act of Legislation of the Government of Alberta. It is a agency  of the Government of Alberta. We receive a yearly allocation from the Ministry of Health and report through the ministry to the people of Alberta.

Our Mandate and Roles document reflects our role and responsibilities and outlines the government statues and regulations with which we comply.

Alberta’s Health Research and Innovation Strategy (AHRIS) sets out Alberta’s health research agenda for the coming decade to ensure our considerable investments in research align with our priority—to improve the health of Albertans.
