Oncologist Dr. Lynne-Marie Postivit recently brought her team of researchers to the University of Alberta from Ontario.

 

She now holds the Alberta Innovates Health Solutions Translational Health Chair in Cancer.

 

DR. LYNNE POSTIVIT:   The Chair is almost an accelerator.  So it infuses money strategically into the research program so that we can accelerate the rate at which we are making advancements in the area of cancer.  So being able to take larger risks and finding better targets for metastatic disease.  In addition it’s really capacity building.  So I came myself. I brought eight members of my research team.  These are PhD students as well as MD’s and PhD’s.  So there’s capacity there.  And then also a new perspective really to Alberta.  And that is looking at how epigenetics, so things that aren’t simply in the genetic code or mutations, can help to drive cancer and how we might actually be able to target that.    And so a lot of what we’re doing is collaborating with researchers throughout the province and adding new expertise.   

 

One project Dr. Lynne-Marie Postivit is working on is finding a better biomarker for ovarian cancer

Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions was established as part of the Alberta Innovates system by an Act of Legislation of the Government of Alberta. It is a agency  of the Government of Alberta. We receive a yearly allocation from the Ministry of Health and report through the ministry to the people of Alberta.

Our Mandate and Roles document reflects our role and responsibilities and outlines the government statues and regulations with which we comply.

Alberta’s Health Research and Innovation Strategy (AHRIS) sets out Alberta’s health research agenda for the coming decade to ensure our considerable investments in research align with our priority—to improve the health of Albertans.
