The Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation has a reputation for innovation and creativity.
One example is the way the Foundation reviews applications for funding.
Grant applications are reviewed by a panel of Canadian and international scientific experts.
But the unique feature of the the Nova Scotia peer review is its observer program.
CEO Krista Connell explains.
KRISTA CONNELL: Another aspect is our observer program. And this where we invite anybody who would like to come in and observe this process so that we take the mystery out of how science is debated, discussed and how we determine what is funded. So it’s not just educational, it’s a communication vehicle and it is also I think very instructional for people. So we have students, junior scientists. We’ve had reporters. We’ve had government officials. We’ve had people from the general public who would like to know just how are these decisions made and, you know, what all goes into it.
According to CEO Krista Connell, the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation also gives applicants extensive feedback to help improve their chances for future funding.
