Innovation Anthology #698:

Dr. Adam Fenech

When climate scientist Dr. Adam Fenech arrived at the University of Prince Island three years ago, people were already suffering the impact of increased coastal erosion due to climate change and rising sea levels.

The Islanders wanted to know what he was going to do about it.

Dr. Fenech started by reconstructing an abandoned network to collect and distribute climate data.

DR ADAM FENECH:
So what we’re doing is we’re going around to provincial agencies, to private homes, and putting all of their climate observations into a data set.   We’ve also purchased ten climate stations that we’ve placed strategically around the island to fill gaps in the climate network as we see it.  But right now we have about fifty locations across the island that are collecting climate data that we’re putting into a data set.   We’re the only place in the world,  that has the output from all forty global climate models that were used in the most recent assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.  And  we have it in a very easily  accessible form for researchers   And this is a global data set.

Dr. Adam Fenech also supervises graduate students researching climate change issues around agriculture, insurance, and windpower.
