Innovation Anthology #699:
Dr. Adam Fenech is a climate scientist at the University of Prince Edward Island.
Coastal erosion from rising sea levels due to climate change is a major problem for the Island.
So Dr. Fenech looked at the amount of erosion between 1968 and 2010, and he determined that Prince Edward Island was losing on average 28 cm of coast per year.
DR ADAM FENECH: Because of the rate of change of our coast, it was looked at for every meter around the Island. We multiplied that by 30 , 60 and 90 years. And our study concluded there are over 1000 homes that were at risk from coastal erosion, 17 lighthouses, 6 golf courses, 6 wastewater treatment facilities. So we mapped all of that out. And then we realized that these studies were great, but we wanted to get the message out. So one of my students, Alex Chang, suggested that we could create this video game so that using an X-Box game controller, we could fly over the island and raise and lower the sea levels at will. And this has turned out to be a very effective tool.
Dr. Fenech named the video game CLIVE which stands for Coastal Impacts Visualization Environment.
