Innovation Anthology #700:
CLIVE is a video game based tool that simulates changes in sea level over time.
CLIVE stands for Coastal Impacts Visualization Environment. It was developed by Dr. Adam Fenech and his colleagues at the Climate Research Lab at the University of Prince Edward Island.
A successful tool for raising awareness, CLIVE has garnered international attention from MIT and was even filmed by the media outlet Al Jazeera
As Dr. Fenech explains, he is now adapting CLIVE for use by other jurisdictions
DR ADAM FENECH: And we’re now exporting this technology to the City of Los Angeles, We also have a few Caribbean Islands who are looking for us to bring CLIVE to their communities as well. Now for smaller areas, especially some of these Caribbean islands that we talked about. What we’ve done is we’ve just ordered a model airplane that has sensors that can get this high level imagery that we require so we can build CLIVE for any area now. It’s not as fast as the LIDAR which flies off of a plane. But one of these model airplanes is able to capture two square kilometers of land for every 40 minutes that we fly it.
