Innovation Anthology #702:
Climate scientist Dr. Adam Fenech is using various methods to collect data on climate change and coastal erosion around Prince Edward Island.
Along with a network of weather stations and aerial photos, Dr. Fenech is also surveying the ground on foot. It’s a process he calls “ground truthing”
DR ADAM FENECH: This is a survey cap that we put on our stakes when we’re on the ground measuring coastal erosion. The province of Prince Edward Island had a program back in the 1980’s that used to measure coastal erosion. And so we took those diaries of that program and we found 48 of the 50 sites. We presume that the remaining two disappeared into the seas, were already taken from coastal erosion. But we already have started putting in more sites across Prince Edward Island. We put in 25 last summer. We’re going to put in 25 this summer. Just so we get a sense of the individual year to year rates of coastal erosion. And these caps are there to identify our stakes in the ground that this is part of this overal coastal erosion study.
By the end of 2015 Dr. Fenech will have established a hundred sites with up to six survey stakes each.
