Innovation Anthology #707:
Baby formula requires the addition of a very important and expensive ingredient that is produced from whey left over from making cheese.
Now the scientists at Ingenuity Lab have discovered a means to produce that ingredient, a very special sugar, much faster and cheaper.
According to Dr. Carlo Montemagno, that’s by using a biological reactor working at the nano scale to speed up the process.
DR CARLO MONTEMAGNO: It’s one of the reasons why baby formula is so expensive. A couple of tablespoons of this is 6 or 7 dollars. And we think that our process now is about 12 times more efficient than the best available commercial process. And our goal is to get it to a hundred times more efficient. And if we’re able to achieve that, it opens the door to applying it to a wide range of markets. The markets which I’m looking for is animal feeds – to provide a nutriceutical benefit, to provide healthier animals, and to enable those animals to be more productive in terms of their growth, reducing the cost of their production and a reduction in the use of antibiotics.
Dr. Carlo Montemagno expects Ingenuity Lab will mount a pilot scale demonstration in early 2016.
