Innovation Anthology #717:
We’re all plagued by that creeping weight gain as we age.
But the research of Dr. Nina Cluny and her colleagues at the University of Calgary may have an antidote for that.
It’s a prebiotic fibre called oligofructose. and in studies with rats, the supplement appears to reduce food intake and shed some body fat.
The next step for Dr. Cluny’s team is to find out exactly how oligofructose works to ward off creeping weight gain.
DR NINA CLUNY: We saw that the animals that received the dietary supplement, the prebiotic fibre, actually had altered levels of gut hormones, the hormones that are released in the intestines, and changes in the levels of hormones that are involved in the regulation of appetite and satiety, so the feeling of fullness when we’re eating. We are going to explore the role of the specific bacteria, and really try and pinpoint exactly which ones are conveying the health benefit, helping to reduce body weight and to change the hormone levels.
Dr. Cluny says while bananas and onions contain tiny amounts of oligofructose, the supplement is readily available in stores.
