Innovation Anthology #721:
Dr. Lori West is a founder and director of the Canadian National Transplant Research Program
It involves 300 associates at 29 universities and clinics who are researching ways to improve organ donations and the transplant process.
According to Dr. West, one promising project is a new way to preserve and transport donated organs.
DR LORI WEST: So one big and very intriguing project that is being led not only in the National program but also here in the Alberta component of that is what we call “ex vivo organ profusion”. And that is, for example, in a heart or a set of lungs, if they need to be moved around the country, they can now instead of being put in a bucket of ice and put on an airplane, they can actually be kept at at regular body temperature but sustained through very innovative machinery that profuse the organ with nutrients and keep them at normal physiology. This is turning out to be a real game changer in the entire transplant field. So this is very exciting.
Dr. West says another area of research is changing protocols over saving organs from potential donors with infections.
