Innovation Anthology #722:
Alberta has a very low rate of organ donations compared to other provinces.
University of Alberta cardiologist Dr. Lori West is looking at how to improve that situation through organizations like the Alberta Transplant Institute and the Canadian National Transplant Research Program.
And one country we could learn from is Spain, the world’s leader in organ and tissue donation.
DR LORI WEST: Spain has a presumed consent legislation which means that instead of opting in, you have to opt out, as it were. But even in Spain the families are consulted. What they say has made the biggest impact is organizational issues. That is, how they set up their system and how they train individuals, individual doctors usually, as donation specialists. And they have them in every hospital in the country. And so it]s recognized that donation is part of the culture and it’s just as important to be trained in understanding the complexities of donation as it is in any other medical sub-specialty.
Dr. Lori West says India is also a country improving its donor program.
