Innovation Anthology #743:
One of the finalists recognized by the Alberta Science and Technology Foundation in 2015 was Dr. Ding-Yu Peng.
Dr. Peng is a renowned researcher in thermodynamics at the University of Saskatchewan.
In the 1990’s, he helped Syncrude design a way to determine the amounts of residual solvents and hydrocarbons in their bitumen waste streams.
This could then maximize their removal before the process water is dumped in tailings ponds.
DR DING-YU PENG: If the solvent is naptha or paraffinic hydrocarbons, they will behave differently at different temperature and pressure conditions. So experimentally it’s very, challenging to get very accurate results. So I was able to design the equipment facility to conduct experiments. And I was also able to use the model to verify the results to their satisfaciton.
Dr. Peng’s discovery has helped to significantly reduce air and water pollution as well as recover valuable chemicals.
