Innovation Anthology #746:
Alberta has a very high rate of premature births.
These babies need care for several days or weeks in neonatal intensive care units.
But this intervention can leave parents on the outside looking in and unprepared to care for their babies once they come home.
Dr Karen Benzies is a nursing researcher leading a new study across Alberta to help change that situation.
It’s funded by Alberta Innovates Health Solutions and Alberta Health Services.
DR KAREN BENZIES: We know that in terms of how to support infants and young children to develop that we need to focus on these early relationships with parents, grandparents and other people. Parents aren’t familiar with the technological environment in the nursery and they feel sometimes like passive bystanders or visitors So it disrupts their ideas, their expectations. But we always know we can do better.
Dr. Karen Benzies says the study will enroll 600 families of preterm infants over the next 12 to 18 months.
