#774: Ecosystem Services Bio Resources Information Management System
Carol Bettac is the Executive Director responsible for Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity with Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions.
Her group is looking at the science of determining an economic value for the ecosystem services that nature provides – just as we now put a price on carbon for offsets and taxes.
Carol outlines some of projects that will help form the Bio Resource Information Management System.
CAROL BETTAC: We started with the biomass. So working with Silvacom which is a resource consulting company. It’s developing what’s all the biomass on the landscape, and putting in place a system that is a living system and continues to be updated and provides information to people in terms of where the biomass is, what type of biomass, and how available it is. We are also doing what we are calling an Ecosystem Services Assessment Project with ABMI (Alberta Biodiversity Montoring Institute) and many of its partners and putting in place a process to evaluate the supply of ecosystem services on the landscape from various different kinds of land management.
Carol Bettac says this could apply in large areas like watersheds within the Land Use Framework.
