#776: Algar: Assessing Ecosystem Values
The Algar Project is named after a forested region south of Fort McMurray.
This is where industry is trying to restore caribou habitat by planting trees on seismic lines.
Scott Wilson is a resource analyst with Silvacom. He says the Algar Project has now expanded
to study various ecosystem services for their potential market value.
SCOTT WILSON: The most interested partner for that last couple of years has been Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions. And they became interested in Algar because they saw the benefits of the caribou habitat but they also were curious about what other benefits were coming out of linear restoration. And that’s when we started talking about eco system services. And we were tracking linear density, carbon, timber supply, but like I said, Alberta Innovates got interested in it. And at that point, we needed to figure out some different ecosystem services to look at. So, we still considered caribou habitat, timber supply, carbon sequestration. But we also started looking at water quality impacts of linear restoration, and biodiversity intactness.
According to Scott Wilson, the plan is to develop a restoration offset model for use in other regions.
