#788: Beef & Biodiversity: Life Cycle Analysis
Dr Danielle Maia de Souza comes to Alberta from Brazil.
She’s an environmental engineer, architect, and city planner with a background in life cycle analysis.
Dr. de Souza is one of many researchers involved a multi-agency project assessing the impact of Alberta’s Beef industry on biodiversity.
Her role is to develop a framework for an environmental life cycle Assessment of beef production
DR DANIELLE MAIA DE SOUZA: So what we do in life cycle assessment is that we look at the product chain, so in that case, that would be beef production. So from the extraction of raw materials until let’s say the consumer’s table. Then we are going associate all the environmental impacts related from the extraction of raw materials, so let’s say, harvesting to supply feed, accounting for transportation impacts, impacts on land, impacts on eutraphication, for example, until the final consumption of that product, meat.
Dr. de Souza says partners in the project include Alberta Innovates, the University of Alberta, Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and the Alberta Livestock Meat Agency.
