#791: GEM Report: Canada Lags In Productivity & Innovation
Dr. Peter Josty is Executive Director of THECIS, The Centre for Innovation Studies and a member of Gem Canada.
The latest Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Report puts Canada in first place for 2015.
But Canada lags behind other countries in productivity and innovation.
Dr. Josty offers these recommendations from GEM Canada.
DR. PETER JOSTY: The ones that we think are really important from the productivity point of view are those start up companies that have potential to scale up and become globally competitive. So one of our recommendations is to try and ensure that public programs and incentives are aligned behind the scale up companies as opposed to the small businesses, the one or two man bands that are going to stay that way. Another recommendation we put in is to try and develop better metrics of scale up. We’ve got really good data on things like unemployment, gross domestic product, but we have very, very skimpy information on scale up activities. People use the word gazelle – fast growth company. We have very, very limited information from that.
Dr. Peter Josty would also like to see entrepreneurship introduced into early education.
