Not only has the Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation changed its name, it has also announced new funding to attack greenhouse gases.

ERA, or Emissions Reduction Alberta has earmarked up to 40 million dollars to support the development of new technologies to lower methane emissions.

As ERA’s Steve Macdonald explains, the Alberta government is calling for a methane reduction of 45 percent by 2025.

STEVE MACDONALD :    The total value of the call is up to 40 million dollars. No more than $5 million per any one target.  Anyone can apply. This is technology developers, industry, small & medium size enterprises, municipalities, universities, even individuals.  So ideas can come from anywhere.  But all the projects must demonstrate a clear and justified value propposition for addressing methane emissions in Alberta.  Anything at a field pilot or demonstration project level must be done in Alberta.  So there’s a whole range of opportunities for promising ideas.

Steve McDonald says oil and gas contributes about 70 percent of Alberta’s methane emissions, with the rest coming from agriculture and waste management.
